The dowry or in Malay culture called the ‘hantaran’, also known as ‘mahar’, is a gift given by the groom to the bride during the solemnization ceremony. It symbolizes the beginning of the groom’s commitment and responsibility towards fulfilling his bride’s everyday needs. The custom of giving dowry is also commonly practiced in Chinese and Indian marriages.
The ‘hantaran’ may be given in cash money or benefits, and one of the most popular gift is jewellery. The jewellery given as ‘hantaran’ usually comes in a set consisting of necklace, earrings, and even a ring of similar design. Other options are bangles and bracelets with gold, diamond or gemstone. On occasions, they do also include gold bar within the ‘hantaran’.
