Found in rivers, seas and lakes, pearls are organic gems which grow inside the tissue of living mollusks. Ancients from the Middle East believed this June birthstone were teardrops fallen from heaven. Cultured pearls come in a variety of colours and shapes, ranging from pale cream and white to rose, lilac, green, gold, gray and black. Perhaps due to the pearlescent glimmer, these organic gems have long been associated with purity, humility and innocence. This is one reason pearls are traditionally given as a wedding gift. They also carry the meaning of ‘sweet simplicity’ as June birthstone.
