WHAT ARE DIAMONDS?

Diamonds are among nature’s most precious and beautiful creations. Due to high temperature and high pressure conditions that exist only about 100 miles beneath the earth’s surface Diamonds are formed. Diamond’s carbon atoms are bonded in essentially the same way in all directions. Graphite is a mineral that has the same make up as Diamond, but they are completely different in terms of their characteristics.

Diamond get its name from the Greek word "adamas," which means “invincible” or “unbreakable.” – perfectly suited for the world’s strongest rock. On almost all modern birthstone lists, Diamonds are recognized today as the birthstone for April.

Fun Fact: Diamond is also the gem that marks the 60th and 75th wedding anniversaries.

Color: Diamonds come in a variety of colors, some of them highly prized (pinks, blues, even yellow). An important note is that in a white diamond, the presence of a yellow tint will lower the value of a diamond. The less body color in a white diamond, the more true color it will reflect, and thus the greater its value.

Fun fact: Out of 100,000 diamonds, only a few will have one of the extremely rare colors. The color can have any intensity between "very light" and "vivid". To be considered a "colored diamond" the color must be noticeable when the diamond is in the face-up position. Black, gray, and white diamonds are also possible.

DIAMOND CARE AND CLEANING

Diamond (10 on the Mohs hardness scale) is usually durable enough to be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner. However, if your diamond birthstone has many inclusions or has been treated, it is best to clean it with a lint-free cloth, or use warm water, mild soap, and a soft toothbrush or a commercial jewellery cleaning solution. Furthermore, it is vital that you have your diamond birthstone jewellery periodically cleaned and its setting examined by professional jewellery to maintain its beauty and integrity over time.
